Although Unalakleet was not incorporated until 1974, its history dates back centuries. The city is located within the Unalakleet-Kaltag Portage, a busy winter travel route that runs between the Norton Sound and the Yukon River. Because of its position, Unalakleet became a major trading destination for the Native American tribes who lived in the area. In the 1830s, the Russian-American Company created a local trading post, which brought more activity and commerce to the area.

Unalakleet is world-famous as the first coastal checkpoint in the Iditarod dog sled race. Mushers start in Anchorage and travel 851 miles before reaching Unalakleet.
